Beginner Swim Program Information - Oromocto, NB

The application period for Soldier On members wishing to participate in the Beginner Swim Program, 7, 14, 21, 28 May 2025 is now open. The application deadline is 21 April 2025.

AIM AND SCOPE OF EVENT: 
With the assistance of the Gagetown Rec. Association Soldier On will offer a 4 week program perfect for new swimmers and those looking to improve technique, this low-impact program builds confidence, efficiency, and water safety. Over four weeks, you'll progress from basic floating and kicking to proper stroke mechanics and breathing coordination. Swimming is gentle on the joints, making it ideal for those with injuries. By the end, you'll feel more comfortable, efficient, and capable in the water.

The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 20.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: 
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from within 2 hours of Oromocto, NB who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.

Selected Serving members will require the approval of their Chain of Command to participate. 

*NOTE FOR SERVING MEMBERS: The selection of serving members for activities outside their local regions for which members will be on TD will align with CAF direction on financial expenditures.

DRAFT SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
7, 14, 21, 28 May 2025
1315hrs-Arrive, check-in with OPI and change for activity.
1330hrs-Come to pool deck for further instructions
1430hrs-Wrap up, change and depart for the day.

Mental & Physical Requirements:
Applicants must be able to tolerate 1.5 hours of light-moderate. Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day. 

Participants should have basic mobility, be comfortable with mild exertion, and have no severe medical conditions affecting safety in the water. Mentally, a willingness to learn, patience, and a positive attitude are key. This low-impact program is beginner-friendly, focusing on skill progression in a supportive environment.

Applicants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment. Applicants are advised that the activity for this event is located at Canadian Armed Forces bases/facilities, and thus they may be exposed to a day-to-day military environment. 

TRANSPORTATION & MEALS:
Participants are advised that meals and transportation will not be provided by Soldier On for this event. Participants will be required to arrange their own travel to and from the event location, travel and meals are not eligible for reimbursement for this event.
