Intro to Woodworking - Fredericton, NB

The application period for Soldier On members wishing to participate in the Intro to Woodworking event, 20, 27 Nov. 4, 11 Dec. is now open. The application deadline is 8 Nov 24.

AIM AND SCOPE OF EVENT: 
Join us for a hands-on workshop in partnership with Soldier On and the Unity Community Centre, where you'll learn to confidently use essential tools like the mitre saw, bandsaw, router, and cordless drill. Emphasizing safety, you'll gain skills to complete projects with assurance. Participants will create a project to take home while also mastering various wood joinery techniques. This four-week beginner course is perfect for anyone eager to dive into woodworking, whether you're just starting out or looking to sharpen your skills!  

The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 10.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: 
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from within 1.5hrs driving distance of the Fredericton area who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.

Selected Serving members will require the approval of their Chain of Command to participate. 

*NOTE FOR SERVING MEMBERS: Amidst current financial limitations and a federal directive to reduce defense spending within DND by a Billion dollars, serving members' participation in Soldier On events and activities will now be limited to within their own local    region (i.e., selection for event outside of where they reside is unlikely). As a result, serving members are advised that participation beyond their local area is likely to be denied, as Soldier On cannot sponsor any temporary duty status for serving members in order to align with government guidelines for expenditure reduction. Unfortunately, serving members are not authorized to participate in Soldier On activities and events while on leave.*

  • 1820hrs-1830hrs: Arrive, check in with Soldier On Regional Coordinator
  • 1830hrs-2020hrs: Instructions and skills practice
  • 2020hrs-2030hrs: Clean-Up and Departure
TRANSPORTATION & MEALS:
Participants are advised that meals and transportation will not be provided by Soldier On for this event. Participants will be required to arrange their own travel to and from the event location, travel and meals are not eligible for reimbursement for this event.

Mental & Physical Requirements:
Applicants must be able to tolerate 2 hours of light paced activities for1 day on a weekly basis. Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day. 

Participants in this woodworking course should have the physical ability to move around the workshop, lift materials up to 20 pounds, and perform detailed tasks with good hand-eye coordination. Stamina to stand and engage in physical activities is also important. Mentally, participants should be able to focus on tasks, follow instructions, solve problems, and collaborate effectively with others. The course is designed to be accessible, so please reach out if you have any concerns about meeting these requirements.

Applicants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.
