Iron Warrior at CFB Petawawa

Soldier On will participate in 2 CMBG IRON WARRIOR on September 11-12. It is an annual marquee event which challenges soldiers and DND employed civilian participants both physically and mentally. 2 CMBG and PSP Petawawa invites a maximum of 10 Soldier On members, including retired veterans, for the first time. The event will take place over two days with a sprint (21 km) option on Sep. 11 and a Marathon (42 km) option on Sep. 12.

There will be a pre-event equipment setup day on September 10.
  • Local Soldier On participants will train prior to the event under their own management, supported by the Eastern Ontario regional coordinator, where possible.
  • PSP training information, online resources and recommended training routines will be offered to each participant as well as local coaching/advice as arranged by the E-ON regional coordinator.
  • The coordination of military equipment (rucksacks, canoes, CADPAT pants) required for the competition will be managed through the E-ON regional coordinator.
Race Information: You may join either option.
  • Day 1: Sprint Option. Approximately 21 km
    • Ruck 11 km , Portage 1 km, Canoe 4.7 km, Ruck 3.6 km.
  • Day 2: Marathon Option. Approximately 42 km
    • Ruck 27 km, Portage 2.6 km, Canoe 4.7 km, Ruck 3.6 km.
Load carriage weight for rucksacks is determined by approximate percentage of bodyweight based on the three weight classes listed below. Consumables such as food, water, and accessories such as headphones are all permitted but not included as part of pack weight. A military rucksack will be made available for training. 
  • ≤ 175 lbs : 25 lbs Ruck 
  • 176-219 lbs : 30lbs Ruck 
  • ≥ 220 lbs : 35 lbs Ruck 
All participants will be permitted to wear footwear of choice. 

Members will require a canoe for training purposes. Canoe average weight should be at between 48-55 lbs.

Training and mentoring will be offered through the 1 RCR Iron Warrior Team and PSP.

The number of Soldier On participants is limited to 10.

Minimum eligibility criteria
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from within 2 hours of the local Eastern Ontario ; Petawawa geographical area who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.

Serving/Retired Members
Medical clearance will be required by all selected participants no later than September 7.

Mental & Physical Requirements
  • Participants must be able to tolerate several hours of continuous strenuous physical activity.
    • This will include carrying a military rucksack (up to 35 lbs), personal equipment and carrying a canoe (up to 55 lbs) all combined at varying times over very long distances.
  • Participants will be sitting, walking, running, lifting, paddling and standing during this event.
  • Applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the day and must be able to participate without being in violation of their MELs.
  • Participants will be joined with other ill/injured members, and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.
  • Participants are advised that the activity for this event is conducted at CFB Petawawa and other participants and observers are Canadian Armed Forces personnel, and thus they will be exposed to a military environment.
  • Participants will be required to cover all costs of meals, accommodations, and travel throughout the entirety of this event.
