Soldier On Adam Foster I Soldier On – Adam Foster The Canadian Armed Forces has taken me many places over my long career, and it has given me a sense of meaning and self-respect. However, like many others in the forces, I pushed my mind and body to the limit, and as the years wore on, I noticed that previously easy activities like ruck-marching and jogging, were getting harder and harder to perform, until one day it was excruciating to keep pace with my brothers in arms. Retirement was very difficult for me, physically, and mentally. No longer capable of the activities I once took for granted, and isolated due to the retirement process, my health deteriorated further, I didn’t realize at time, but I basically didn’t have a social life and all I wanted to do was be alone and not speak to my friends or family. It caused me to shy away from activities I had once enjoyed, like fishing and kayaking. I heard about the Canadian Armed Forces Transition Group’s Soldier On Grant program, and used it to purchase a fishing kayak over 4 years ago, and after that I attended the National Ski Camp at Mt Washington in 2018. That grant from Soldier On re-ignited my passion for Sport fishing, and when I was on Mt Washington, I had the inspiration to start my own kayak Sport fishing Guide service, “Strike Back Sportfishing Adventures”. Without Soldier On I would never have returned to the sport of fishing, and acquired the kayak and equipment that started my new path in life. Sportfishing has granted me a new breath of life. Whether it is guiding a fishing tour from a kayak or enjoying some bass-boat fishing; it’s a great outlet for the mind and the body, and I would have been lost without it during my release.
